Covid boosters for wealthy nations spark outrage; WHO seeks moratorium

  • WHO called for a moratorium on Covid vaccine booster shots until the end of September. WHO chief Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus highlighted vaccine disparity as rich nations plan booster doses for citizens. Dr. Tedros stressed that there is a need for an urgent reversal of vaccination supply. “While millions are waiting for the first dose, rich countries are moving towards a booster dose. 80% of vaccines administered globally have gone to high & upper-middle income nations. I understand the concern of all governments to protect their people from the Delta variant. But countries that have used most of the global supply of vaccines, can't use more of it,” he said. “We need an urgent reversal, the majority of vaccines should go to low-income countries. WHO is calling for a moratorium on boosters until at least the end of September. This is to enable at least 10% of the population of every country to be vaccinated,” he added.
