‘Congress chose votes over justice’: Smriti Irani on Triple Talaq ban
Union Minister Smriti Irani launched a scathing attack on the Congress and accused it of choosing vote bank politics over justice to Muslim women in the 1980s. Addressing an event to commemorate one year of the law banning Triple Talaq, Smriti Irani said Congress had acted to protect their political interests when they were in power. She also lauded those activists who took the matter to the courts demanding justice for women of the entire community. Union Ministers Ravi Shakar Prasad and Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi were also present at the event and interacted with Muslim women from across the country via video conference. Both the ministers also attacked the Congress party and lauded PM Modi for his leadership role in the abolition of the practice. BJP was celebrating 31 July, 2020 as Muslim Women Rights Day to commemorate the passage of The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, the law banning triple talaq and making it a criminal offence.
