PM Modi’s veiled terror jibe at Pak, China at UNGA; seeks UNSC seat: Full speech

Updated on Sept 26, 2020 08:05 pm IST

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly on September 26. The leitmotif of his speech was reform in the international body, with adequate responsibility of representation for India - the world's largest democracy with over 18% of the global population. PM Modi said that while the UN had many achievements to its credit in its 75-year history, there were many examples reinforcing the need for reform in the organisation. He said that although World War 3 hadn't taken place, the violence perpetrated by many other wars couldn't be overlooked. He then segued into the loss of human life caused by terrorism and asked whether UN's actions had been adequate in addressing this threat to humanity. This was seen as a veiled jibe at terror centres like Pakistan and nations which shield and given patronage to them, like China. The Prime Minister asked how long India would have to wait for a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council table, despite directing all its actions towards the welfare of the entire world. He also asked the UN to introspect whether its response to the Covid-19 pandemic was satisfactory. Watch the full video for PM Modi's entire speech to the UN.
