Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on the 74th Independence Day from the ramparts of the Red Fort in the national capital. He announced the launch of the National Digital Health Mission. It will provide a digital health ID to every person in the country and individual medical reports and doctor prescriptions will be linked to it. PM Modi also referred to the tense situation at the Line of Actual Control with China (LAC), and Line of Control (LoC) with Pakistan. He said that neighbours' misadventures from LoC to LAC had been responded to in kind by India's security forces. He also reiterated his 'atmanirbhar' or self-reliance push, stating that a strong India is in the interest of the world. This was Modi's 7th consecutive Independence Day speech as the Prime Minister. It coincided with the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic. Referring to the outbreak, PM Modi said that India was fighting vigorously, with work on three indigenous vaccine candidates underway.
