As an apparent new year gift, the Jammu and Kashmir administration fully restored SMS services in the Valley with effect from January 1, 2020. Communication services in the erstwhile state had been suspended to prevent untoward incidents in the aftermath of the Centre's decision to abrogate J&K's special status by diluting Article 370 of the Constitution. The administration has been gradually easing the restrictions. However, over 25 lakh pre-paid mobile phones, and mobile internet connectivity continue to remain suspended.
