Watch: Dalit ragpicker was beaten to death in Gujarat

A Dalit couple was thrashed allegedly by factory workers in Rajkot. The incident took place on May 20. The 40 years old victim, Mukesh Savji Vaniya, was tied to a pipe and beaten up. He was taken to Rajkot Civil Hospital but was declared dead on arrival. The couple had gone to collect trash near the factory and was mistaken for thieves. Victim's wife and another woman, Savita, who came to rescue Vaniya were also allegedly attacked. MLA Jignesh Mevani, who is also a Dalit rights activist, condemned the incident on Twitter saying, “Mukesh Vaniya belonging to scheduled caste was miserably thrashed and murdered by owners in Rajkot and his wife was brutally beaten up #GujaratIsNotSafe4Dalit. The family of the deceased is seeking justice from the state government. So far police have arrested four people in connection with the case.
