CAG not just 'munimji', it can comment on govt expense: SC

The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a PIL, which sought to rein in the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) from commenting on policy issues, saying that the national auditor is not just a 'munimji'. "The office of CAG is not a munim's office...it's a constitutional body. If the CAG exceeds its brief, then there is Parliament to correct it," the apex court bench observed. The comment was made as the apex court bench rejected a PIL challenging the CAG's report on coal, which said that by allocating coal fields without transparency the government has allowed private firms to benefit by up to Rs. 1.86 lakh crores.
