Gorkhas in Siliguri go on indefinite hunger strike

After launching a fast-unto death in Darjeeling hills on Friday, the Gorkhas intensified their agitation for a separate state by going on an indefinite hunger strike in Siliguri town in West Bengal on Saturday. Last year as well the region was crippled by numerous agitations and protests by the Gorkha activists. At least 1,200 people died in the first Gorkhaland campaign in the 1980s, but protests ended a few years later after Gorkha leaders accepted limited autonomy.
