The Khijadia Bird Sanctuary in Gujarat has been nominated as the global index for prominent wetlands and mangroves favoured by birds. The Ramsar site encompasses not just marshes and lakes, but also coral reefs, peat forests, temporary pools, even underground caves, including man-made habitats. Spread over 605 hectares, Khichadia Bird Sanctuary is a unique wetland area with seawater on one side and fresh water on the other.
