Besides targeting security forces, the common man, especially people living in remote, tribal areas have always been on the hit list of the naxals.Ramita Dhurwa of Rajnandgaon district's Jangaltola in Chattisgarh, who runs a self-help group, is one such victim. She was abducted by the naxals. They thrashed her on suspicion of being a police informer. Initially, the Maoists contended they are fighting for the cause of poor and weaker sections of the society whereas over the past two decades they have turned extremely violent and do not hesitate to kill innocent civilians. The rebels have spread into rural pockets of 20 of India's 28 states.
