Updated on Jun 12, 2015 02:26 pm IST
Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Friday promised support to striking sanitation workers in East Delhi, where thousands of tonnes of rotting waste have piled up, shortly before the Delhi high court stepped in to the solve the garbage mess by directing authorities to release their salaries. Gandhi met the striking workers at Patparganj and sat on the ground beside them as a gesture of solidarity. He pledged to join their protest, saying: "You are like soldiers. I will come to your help whenever you need." More than 12,000 'safai karamcharis' or sanitation workers have been on strike for 10 days, demanding salaries which they say have not been paid for the past two months.
