The Cabinet on Thursday approved a Rs 1,200 crore plan to overhaul Mumbai's 150-year-old drainage system. The existing storm water drainage system laid by the British government has outlived its utility and could not withstand higher rainfall, as witnessed by the city in recent years. City has at present Gravity Storm Water system consisting of network of drains below road level in the city and open drains in both eastern and western suburbs.
