Worsening financial situation - ballooning import bills, crisis-hit Sri Lanka lacks funds to repay debt. The island nation's new government plans to sell flag carrier SriLankan Airlines to stem ongoing losses. SriLankan airlines lost about $123MN in the year ending march 2021 & aggregate losses exceeded $1BN as of March 2021. Lankan PM said, 'it shouldn't be that this loss has to be borne by poorest of the poor who haven't set foot in a plane'. However, the Sri Lankan govt has the task cut out, as selling the flag carrier won't be easy.
