Mumbai rains: Over 20 die after landslides hit city, PM announces compensation

- At least 25 people were killed in house collapses triggered by landslides in Mumbai. The accidents were reported as incessant overnight rains pounded Mumbai, nearby areas. The city witnessed severe water-logging, disruption of local train services & vehicular traffic. Around 17 people died as a compound wall came crashing down on some houses after a landslide. A fire official said the mishap took place at Bharatnagar Vashi Naka locality in Mahul area. Seven people got injured in the accident & were taken to nearby Rajawadi hospital. In another incident, seven hutment dwellers died as five shanties collapsed after a landslide. According to a civic official, the incident occurred in Vikhroli suburb at midnight. Two persons were injured in the mishap & were sent to a nearby hospital. A 16-year-old boy died after a forest dept compound wall collapsed in suburban Bhandup. The IMD has issued a red alert for Mumbai in the backdrop of heavy rains. It added that a sudden change in climatic conditions led the city to witness over 100 mm rainfall in 6 hours.
