‘No decision on UCC yet...' Rijiju tells MPs; ‘States empowered to legislate’

  • Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju has informed the Parliament that the Modi govt has no plans to implement the Uniform Civil Code in the country as of now. In a written reply in the Parliament, Rijiju said that the matter is sub-judice citing writ petitions pending in the Supreme Court. He also said that Article 44 of the Constitution provides that the state shall endeavour to secure for the citizens a uniform civil code throughout the territory of India.
