A new ministry was created a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi carried out a huge reshuffle of his Cabinet. The new Ministry of Cooperation is helmed by the Union Home Minister Amit Shah. The stated aim of the new ministry is to help build agriculture and livestock-based cooperatives, strengthen cooperative-based economic model, provide ease of doing business for cooperatives, among others. What the new ministry may achieve is to break of influence of middlemen, traders on cultivators, incentivize farmers to capitalize on recent farm laws and increase farmers’ income and land productivity.
