One-horned rhino census 2018 in Kaziranga shows rhino populations growing

Updated on Mar 30, 2018 06:29 pm IST

Indian rhinos are making a comeback. This year's census counted 2,413 rhinos in Kaziranga, up from 2,401 in 2015. That's 12 new rhinos.

In the early 1900's there were less than 200 rhinos left in Asia.

The new population count may not seem like much, but one-horned rhinos have a slow reproductive cycle. Pregnancy lasts 15 to 16 months, and calves stay with their mothers for a year and a half before going off on their own. Female rhinos can give birth to around 10-13 babies in their lifetime

These rhinos continue to be poached, but conservation efforts have been pretty successful.
