Poland backs away from hosting nukes as Russia showdown fears grow?

Published on Aug 29, 2026 02:16 pm IST

Poland has ruled out stationing nuclear weapons on its territory despite growing security concerns over Russia and calls for stronger NATO deterrence. Deputy Defence Minister Cezary Zalewski said Warsaw wanted to remain part of NATO’s nuclear deterrence system without hosting nuclear warheads. The position differs from earlier calls for greater access to U.S. and French nuclear capabilities and comes amid debate over Poland’s long-term nuclear strategy. Warsaw now appears focused on strengthening NATO’s existing nuclear umbrella rather than placing nuclear weapons on Polish soil.
