Russia has taken a sharp swipe at Hungary’s new leadership after the fall of longtime ally Viktor Orban. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow does not send congratulations to “unfriendly countries,” signalling unease with Prime Minister-elect Peter Magyar. While Russia said it remains open to “pragmatic ties,” it made clear future relations will depend on Budapest’s actions. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov also stressed Moscow will judge Hungary by its policies, not rhetoric. Despite tensions, Magyar signalled Hungary will continue importing Russian energy, even as he pushes diversification and warns the EU against economic “self-harm.”
