A Royal Saudi Naval Forces official was quoted as saying that undersea warfare is no longer optional, stressing that submarines have become essential for both deterrence and modern maritime security. Because it lacks submarines, Saudi Arabia has historically had limited intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance reach below the surface, making it harder to track threats or covertly monitor key sea lanes.
