‘Schengen was never in danger’: Spain slams Italy’s ‘disproportionate’ border checks | Ceuta

Published on Aug 05, 2026 08:19 am IST

Spain’s Interior Minister Fernando Grande‑Marlaska says the Ceuta migrant surge has not put the Schengen area at risk, blasting Italy’s temporary reintroduction of border checks with Spain as “absolutely unnecessary and disproportionate” and insisting that “Schengen was never in danger,” noting that Spain hasn’t imposed internal controls, Ceuta has a special regime where no one leaves without checks, and Frontex and other EU bodies have confirmed free movement was not threatened. He defends Spain’s “preventive” migration policy—cooperation with origin and transit countries, new temporary care centers, and a reported 30% drop in irregular entries—while warning that not all tools are acceptable in the fight against irregular migration, only those grounded in EU values and human rights.
