U.S. Special Envoy Tom Barrack outlined lessons from the failure of Western-centric models in the Middle East, proposing regional realignment based on local interests and economic diversification. Barrack described ongoing peace talks between Syria and Israel, highlighting the momentum toward de-escalation and normalization, while emphasizing the urgent need to stop violence and address humanitarian needs. He described Lebanon as a failed state with deep financial and institutional crises, where Hezbollah effectively replaces the state by providing social and military support. Barrack called for bold action, encouraging Lebanon to follow Syria’s example with direct dialogue, noting that Syria’s President Ahmed al-Sharaa is set for a historic visit to Washington to join the U.S.-led anti-ISIS coalition.
