U.S seeks to stabilise ties with Beijing after China simulates attack on American Navy ships

The United States and China held talks amid rising tensions between the two sides. The U.S. Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, spoke to the incoming Chinese Foreign Minister, Qin Gang, over the phone on New Year's Day. Antony Blinken said that we need to maintain open lines of communication. He held talks with the new Chinese Foreign Minister, Qin Gang, before he departed for China. Notably, Beijing has appointed its ambassador to the United States, a trusted aide of President Xi Jinping, to be its new foreign minister.
