Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced the construction of more than 3000 new settlements in the occupied West Bank. Smotrich said that the decision was taken in response to a Palestinian attack in which an Israeli citizen was killed on February 22. Smotrich said in a statement that the decision to advance plans for 2,350 new housing units in Ma’ale Adumim, 300 in Kedar, and 694 in Efrat was made during a meeting he held with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, and Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer. The move is expected to cause a rift with the United States.
