Cuban winemaker uses condoms for fermenting fruits

For many Cubans, the allure of a better life in the private sector has spurred the imaginative and ambitious to strike out on their own. Orestes Estevez is a fruit winemaker finding success using condoms in the fermentation process. Estevez uses the condoms to assist the fermentation of fruit in plastic bottles. The 65-year-old has made wine for decades. After a career in the military and security services, he legalized his business and opened a tiny winery in 2000 as communist Cuba took the first steps toward allowing private enterprise. The winery has become a neighborhood attraction, with residents of the El Cerro neighborhood sitting on the curb at all hours sipping Estevez's wine from green glasses.
