Explained: China’s new strict data privacy-law and what it means for tech giants

China intensified crackdown on internet industries as it passed a new online privacy law. The new law aims to curb and regulate online data collection by private companies. The Personal Information Protection Law (PIPL) is the first such law in China. It was passed by the National People’s Congress and will be implemented by November. According to state-run Xinhua News Agency, the full text of the law is not public yet. The law comes amid increasing scrutiny of tech giants like Alibaba, Tencent, Didi by the Chinese government.
