Quake-hit Japan’s worst power crisis; govt issues dire plea to save energy

Published on Mar 22, 2022 03:34 pm IST

The warning came amid a power shortage after a 7.4 magnitude earthquake last week shut several plants. On Tuesday, Japan issued an emergency plea for citizens, businesses and local authorities to conserve energy. Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) asked users to conserve energy due to plant shutdowns following the quake. But with sporadic snowfall and unseasonably cold temperatures in the capital, demand remained strong. Japan's industry minister Koichi Hagiuda warned of more power cuts to prevent a total blackout.
