Explained: Sri Lanka suicide bombings fallout

Updated on May 14, 2019 08:12 pm IST

A Sri Lankan Muslim man was lynched on Monday night in a violent backlash against Easter suicide bombings. The incident took place despite a nationwide curfew which was imposed following anti-Muslim riots which spread to three districts north of the capital. On April 21, nine suicide bombers, including a woman, carried out a series of blasts and killed more than 250 people and injuring over 500 others. The Islamic State terror group claimed the attacks but the Sri Lankan government blamed local Islamist extremist group National Thowheeth Jamaath (NTJ). So far, over 1,000 have been arrested in connection with the attacks.
