‘Those who play with fire…’: How Xi-Biden red flagged Taiwan in virtual summit

Taiwan once again emerged as a sticking point during the first Xi-Biden virtual summit. Biden told Xi that the United States strongly opposed ‘unilateral efforts’ to change status quo on Taiwan. The White House reiterated that the US does not recognize Taiwan's independence but supports defense of the island. Chinese premier Xi Jinping however stuck to his guns on Taiwan during the virtual summit. Xi reportedly cautioned Biden that encouraging Taiwanese independence would be ‘playing with fire’.
