Watch: Iran elects ultraconservative cleric Ebrahim Raisi as its new president

Published on Jun 19, 2021 03:24 pm IST

  • Iran's hard-line judiciary chief won the presidential election in a landslide victory. Win propelled the supreme leader's protege into Tehran's highest civilian position. This time, the polls appeared to see the lowest turnout in the Islamic Republic's history. Initial results showed Ebrahim Raisi, the ultraconservative cleric, won 17.8 million votes in the contest. However, Raisi dominated polls only after a panel disqualified his strongest competition. Raisi's candidacy sparked widespread apathy among eligible voters in the Islamic Republic. Some, including former hard-line President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, called for a boycott. 60-year-old Ebrahim Raisi is set to take over from moderate Hassan Rouhani in August. As head of judiciary, Raisi has driven a popular campaign to prosecute corrupt officials. In the election campaign, Raisi vowed to build 'a government of the people for a strong Iran'.
