World War I recordings reveal joy, despair on Armistice Day

November 11, 2018 marks a century since the end of World War . Newly-exhibited audio recordings are revealing the mixed emotions caused by the armistice. They feature British soldiers, but also civilians back home and witnesses who were school children in 1918. All experienced Armistice Day. While many celebrated, others raged over the huge loss of life. Curator Richard Hughes says armistice provoked mixed reactions from solemn to celebratory.
