Greece election: Angry voters punish major parties
Updated on May 07, 2012 02:15 pm IST
Greece's Left Coalition Party supporters celebrated on Sunday (May 6) after the party of leader Alexis Tsipras has emerged as the surprise star of the election and is on track to finish in second place with 16 % of the vote, according to early results. The success comes at the expense of the big pro-bailout parties, New Democracy and PASOK, who were punished for backing austerity. Meanwhile, investors are likely to react with alarm to the electoral drubbing handed to these parties but analysts have said that there could be a silver lining if Europe is forced to think more seriously about fostering growth.
