Zelensky’s deal scares NATO nation, triggers urgent missile request with a range far beyond Russia

Sweden’s armed forces have called for acquiring new long-range cruise or ballistic missiles with ranges of up to 2,000 km, arguing the country must be able to strike deep inside Russian territory if NATO’s collective defence clause is ever triggered. Military planners say such weapons would target Russian command centers, sensors, and critical infrastructure to deter a major attack, noting that Moscow could significantly rebuild its forces within the next two to five years. Sweden has already ordered 500 km-range Taurus cruise missiles for its Gripen jets but now wants much longer‑range systems, alongside stronger air and missile defence, drones, and reconnaissance assets, marking a major shift in posture for NATO’s newest member.
