India and the United States on Tuesday called on Pakistan to “meaningfully address” global concerns on terrorism and cross-border terrorism, during Indian foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale’s ongoing trip for diplomatic consultations.
“Both sides called on Pakistan to meaningfully address the concerns of the international community on terrorism, including cross-border terrorism,” Indian embassy said in a readout of Gokhale’s meeting with his US counterpart, under-secretary for political affairs David Hale.
The two countries had issued a call to Pakistan to undertake “concerted action” to dismantle its terror network after Gokhale called on US secretary of state Michael R Pompeo on Monday. And National Security Adviser John Bolton wrote shortly after on Twitter he had asked Pakistan’s foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi to take “meaningful” steps toward combatting terrorism.
Gokhale and Hale also reviewed progress on subjects discussed and agreed upon at the first 2+2 ministerial meeting in New Delhi last September and on how to build on “convergences in the Indo-Pacific and agreed to work with each other and regional partners to promote inclusivity, stability, peace and prosperity in the region”.
The foreign secretary is in the US for a round of pre-scheduled diplomatic consultations, which given the context of the Pulwama attack, has seen the two countries to stress counter-terrorism, an issue that is of utmost importance to both, and Pakistan continued support of terrorism as a foreign policy tool.
