Another ‘missing’ Indian student found dead in Ohio, US, 11th such case this year

Last week another Indian-origin student Uma Satya Sai Gadde, was found mysteriously dead in Cleveland, Ohio.

The Indian embassy in New York has confirmed the tragic news that Mohammed Abdul Arfath, a 25-year-old student from Hyderabad who had enrolled for a Master’s program at Cleveland State University in 2023, is found dead in Ohio.

Abdul had been missing for almost three weeks.

The Indian embassy had previously communicated that they were coordinating the search efforts with Abdul’s family and local authorities. Today, they announced his passing.

The embassy expressed their sorrow with the following statement: “Anguished to learn that Mr. Mohammed Abdul Arfath, for whom search operation was underway, was found dead in Cleveland, Ohio. Our deepest condolences to Mr Mohammed Arfath’s family.”

This is the eleventh Indian to die in the US this year. The string of Indian-origin students dying in the US continues.

Last week Uma Satya Sai Gadde, who was also in college in Cleveland, was found dead, his investigation is underway.

The community is deeply concerned about the safety and security of Indian students abroad, especially in light of the eleventh such incidents reported this year. The growing number of fatalities has raised alarms about their well-being.

In earlier events, a 34-year-old Indian classical dancer was tragically killed in St. Louis, Missouri, and a 23-year-old student of Indian descent was found dead in Indiana. Additionally, a 41-year-old professional from the Indian community suffered critical injuries after an attack in Washington.

These occurrences have intensified fears within the Indian diaspora regarding the safety of their kin studying in foreign lands.
