Chris Rea, who sang hits like Driving Home for Christmas and Josephine, has died after a “short illness.” He was 74. A spokesperson for his family confirmed the news of his death on Monday, per The Guardian.

“It is with immense sadness that we announce the death of our beloved Chris. He passed away peacefully in hospital earlier today following a short illness, surrounded by his family,” the statement on behalf of Rea's wife and children read. The British rocker is survived by his wife of 57 years, Joan, and their two daughters, Josephine and Julia.
While an official cause of death has yet to be revealed, Rea suffered a number of health issues over the years. In 2000, he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and had his pancreas removed the following year. Despite his several health challenges, including diabetes, he continued to work, per the outlet.
In 2016, he suffered a stroke that left him with limited movement in his arms and fingers and a slightly slurred speech. Born in Middlesbrough, Rea shot to fame in the late ‘70s and ’80s with his hit songs: Fool (If You Think It's Over), which was nominated for a Grammy, Let's Dance, and The Road to Hell.
