The Defence Ministry said in a statement that the MiG-29 Lancer went down killing the pilots immediately near the Transylvanian town of Campia Turzii.

It says the crew was on a weather reconnaissance flight before taking part in a pilot instruction flight.

Realitatea TV identified one of the victims as Laurentiu Chirita, an experienced fighter pilot who had taken part in missions in international missions, in Sweden, Italy and the US.

In 2007, he headed a Romanian mission in the Baltics and was awarded a medal by the Lithuanian air force. No further information was immediately available.
