At least 22 school children were killed and over 50 injured when a bus carrying them back from picnic skidded off a bridge in southern Nepal.

The bus, which was returning from Butawal to Chitawan district, was carrying more than 80 students when the accident occurred nearly 200 kms from the capital Kathmandu, police said.

The bus, ferrying students of the Hill Bird Boarding School in Chitawan skidded off a bridge at a highway near Gaidakot at around 9.30 pm on Thursday night, they said.

Police personnel and local people, who rushed to the spot shortly after the accident, took the injured persons to the Chitawan district hospital and Bharatpur hospital, where they are being treated.
