The al-Qaeda and Taliban have threatened Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari and the army of "dire consequences" if the military operation against them in the unruly northwestern tribal areas was not halted "immediately", the ruling PPP said on Saturday.
A letter purportedly from the terrorist groups has been received by Pakistan People's Party central information secretary Fauzia Wahab. The letter mentions the names of Zardari and Interior Minister Rehman Malik besides cautioning the army over the offensive in Swat Valley and nearby districts, Wahab told PTI.
The al-Qaeda and Taliban have asked the President to "immediately" halt the operation and pull out the army from there or face "dire consequences", she said.
"I can't read out the other contents of the letter because it contains abusive language," she said adding, the Taliban had warned her for speaking against them publicly.
Wahab said the government did not care for such threats and the military operation would continue till the elimination of the last militant from the restive region.
The military says over 1,100 militants and more than 60 security personnel have died since operations were launched against the Taliban in Buner, Dir and Swat districts.
