Bangladeshi volunteers today formed the world's largest national flag as the country commemorated its victory in the 1971 liberation war against Pakistan.
A total of 27,117 volunteers from the Bangladesh Army, educational institutions and the general public stood with arms raised holding red and green placards to form the national flag of Bangladesh depicting a red disc on top of a green field, at the National Parade Ground in Dhaka.
After a couple of short trials, the participants completed the flag formation at 1:30 pm.
The participants stood making the formation for 6 minutes and 16 seconds, though the requirement for setting a new world record was only 5 minutes, an officer of Guinness Records told the cheering crowd.
The organisers earlier said the main objective of this event was not only to celebrate Bangladesh's Victory Day in its liberation war, which falls Monday, but also to show the world the inner strength and unity of the people of the nation.
The organisers now await official acknowledgement by the Guinness Book of World Records for recognition of the feat.
A Guinness-accredited auditor was present to oversee the creation of the national human flag.
The previous record was set by students in Pakistan last year during the Punjab Youth Festival.
Bangladesh's third largest cell phone operator, Robi Axiata, in collaboration with the Bangladesh Army, organised the event in Dhaka.
