A British soldier was killed in Afghanistan on Monday after being wounded during a fire fight in Helmand province, the Ministry of Defence said on Tuesday.

"Initial reports suggest that this death may have resulted from a friendly fire incident," the ministry said in a statement.

Britain was already investigating whether a soldier killed in a separate incident in southern Afghanistan on Sunday may also have been the victim of friendly fire.
Britain has lost 242 soldiers since it joined the U.S.-led invasion to topple the Taliban in 2001.
