Police say nine bodies have been recovered from the wreckage of a downed helicopter that crashed in the freezing Atlantic off the coast of Newfoundland. Royal Canadian Mounted Police Sgt Wayne Newell said on Monday the bodies came ashore on board a supply vessel dispatched to bring back as many remains as possible back. A total of 18 people were on the chopper when it crashed last Thursday. Ten bodies have been recovered. One person survived.

Newell says the ship will return to the crash site on Monday and attempt to retrieve more bodies before trying to pull up the damaged fuselage.

The Sikorsky S-92 was carrying 18 workers to oil platforms on Thursday when it reported mechanical problems and ditched into the sea about 30 miles (50 kilometers) from shore.
