"Aung San Suu Kyi is a symbolic figure of the global fight for human rights. Her pacificism and intransigence have made her a model," Merkel said in a statement that expressed her 'delight' at her release.

Merkel also 'called for the freeing of the more than 2,000 other political prisoners' in Myanmar, her statement said.
