Germany wins eights gold at world champs

Germany edged Britain by 0.62 seconds to win the men's eights final, the blue riband event on the last day of the World Rowing Championships on Lake Karapiro.

The crew of Gregor Hauffe, Maximilian Reinelt, Kristof Wilke, Florian Mennigen, Richard Schmidt, Lukas Mueller, Toni Seifert, Sebastian Schmidt and Martin Sauer won the race in 5 minutes, 33.84 seconds, giving Germany its third gold medal from seven finals on Sunday.

The British eight, which held second by 1.5 seconds from Australia, included 38-year-old Gregory Searle who returned to competition this year after a decade in retirement and was chasing his second world title, 17 years after his first.
