Govt wakes up to H1N1 crisis; PMO to monitor situation

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Sunday spoke to Health Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad as swine flu claimed two more lives in India, taking the national death toll to four since August 3.

“The prime minister spoke with the minister over phone,” an official of the prime minister's office said.

A 42-year-old school teacher from a village near Pune and a 43-year-old non-resident Indian (NRI) man who had flown from the US to Ahmedabad died of swine flu on Sunday.

India has reported a total of 783 cases of which over 500 patients have been cured. The most badly hit states are Delhi and Maharashtra.
