Chinese President Xi Jinping departed from Pakistan on Tuesday after what observers said was a hugely successful visit in which Beijing reaffirmed its support to Islamabad. The two sides have signed a number of agreements that will help lift Pakistan from its economic downturn including its current energy crisis.
In an address to the joint session of parliament, Xi lauded Pakistan’s efforts for being at the front line of the war against terrorism. "The country has made great progress in its efforts for eradicating terrorism," Xi said in his address that was attended by civilian and military leaders.
Terming the friendship between Pakistan and China a ‘truly unique’ one, Xi said, "Our friendship is deeper than oceans."
On the economic corridor, the president said it was "to help Pakistan, and is to help ourselves." Xi asserted China would support Pakistan and provide any assistance required for the ongoing efforts in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa region and Federally Administered Tribal Area.
PM Nawaz Sharif thanked China for standing by Pakistan and termed the two nations as ‘iron brothers’. "We need to intensify our efforts to overcome these challenges," he added.
During his visit, Pakistan and China more than 50 agreements worth $28 billion, mostly covering commercial loans to Pakistani power generation companies, but also including financing agreements for six infrastructure projects that will set in motion work on a trade corridor connecting western China with Gwadar port.
