Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit said that Israel was the main obstacle to Egyptian efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza.

Asked by reporters what the main obstacle was, he said "Israeli intransigence," adding: "Israel is drunk with power and violence."

Egypt has been holding separate meetings with representatives from Israel and the Islamist Hamas movement that controls Gaza in a bid to broker a truce.
