The Republican made his first comments on the Senate floor since his rival in last year's election, President Barack Obama, was sworn into office.

He said the U.S. has come together in a way that it has not for some time. McCain was speaking in defense of Hillary Rodham Clinton's appointment as the next secretary of State. Senate leaders had planned to confirm her by unanimous consent on Tuesday, but Republican Sen. John Cornyn objected because of concerns raised about foreign contributions to the charity of her husband, former President Bill Clinton.

A roll call vote was planned for late Wednesday.
