Adding another twist to Mel Gibson’s high profile divorce, the actor’s lawyer has called for removal of the judge overseeing the case proceedings.
The ‘Braveheart´ actor’s lawyer, Bob Kaufman filed legal papers on Thursday in which he said Gibson believes he “cannot have a fair and impartial trial or hearing before Judge Ongkeko,” TMZ.com reported.
Following the appeal, the case has now been handed over to Judge Frederick Shaller, but the case is expected to be handled by a “private judge”, which could happen soon.
The actor’s wife Robyn had filed for the divorce last Monday to end their 28-year old marriage, citing “irreconcilable differences.” She is also fighting for the joint custody of their nine-year-old Thomas.
Meanwhile, Robyn has hired top divorce lawyer Laura Wasser to fight her case. Wasser has the experience of handling celebrity divorce cases like that of Angelina Jolie, Britney Spears and Stevie Wonder.
