Mother Teresa’s message of peace will once again reverberate in the streets of Belfast when a sculpture of the Saint is unveiled during an annual community arts festival next week.
The artwork, titled “From Calcutta to Springhill - A Saint in our Street”, will be unveiled on Tuesday as part of the annual ‘Feile an Phobail´ festival. It will be located in Springhill Avenue, where the Nobel Peace prize winner worked.
Designed and built by artist Tony Currie, the Corpus Christi Ladies’ Group and schoolchildren from Bunscoil an tSleibhe school also assisted in the project.
The sculpture has been made from stone, bronze, mosaic and salvaged stained glass from the windows of the old Corpus Christi chapel.
Deirdre Mackel, a member of the Upper Springfield Development Trust, said the sculpture represents a certain period in history.
“It serves as a reminder that Mother Teresa actually lived and worked in the streets where the sculpture is placed,” Mackel said.
Founder of the Missionaries of Charity, Mother Teresa arrived in Belfast in 1973 and started this mission alongwith four other nuns.
